Access. 'Ecosystem' #20
Your weekly guide on tech news and early stage fundraising - democratizing access to the venture capital for less networked founders and junior VCs.
Hello and welcome to issue #20!
One of the biggest challenges outsiders to any sector face is .. well that - not having the right contacts to help them excel further in their career. In venture, the lack of a s strong support network is a barrier many first-time founders and junior VCs need to overcome. Not knowing who to turn to when you need help or advice and where to begin. This is what drove the start of the ‘Ecosystem’ project - the desire to democratize access to capital for less experienced entrepreneurs and create a better understanding of the venture industry for junior VCs. What has your experience been as a reader/viewer/participant?
A lot of great founder lessons were shared last week!
It was an absolute pleasure to speak with Chris Heivly, VP Innovation at Techstars at #EcosystemGiants(a session in collaboration with UNDP Cambodia’s Bluetribe program). Chris has an extensive knowledge of launching and scaling businesses, having sold his company MapQuest to AOL for over $1 billion and later on, moving over to the investor side (running his own accelerator). What did he learn along the way? Key insights shared:
-Surround yourself with smart people you can learn from and do not be afraid to ask questions.
-Founders may come to a place where they would have exhausted their skills and experience. In the moment when the business needs more, there are two options - fight to stay because of ego or ‘let go’ because it is best for the company. Be self-aware and choose wisely.
-Build a network that is not all-transactional.
A lesson on prioritization and time management?
“The biggest problem with a startup is not what you do, it is what you say no to. That has to be communicated very clearly to everyone in the organization for you to optimally work on what is important.”
Until next week 👋
