What is the single best indicator for the health of an ecosystem? According to Seedtable, it is the number of early-stage companies being founded and funded. A year following the start of the pandemic, pre-seed investments are down in six out of the top seven European ecosystems (example: from $20m in 2019 to $13m in 2020 in Germany - stats). Is it because rounds are getting bigger or because raising pre-seed has become more challenging for less networked/‘obvious’ founders?
What about the state of the startup ecosystem in Asia? What role has venture capital played in the rapid development of innovation in the region and what is the future of work?
It is a great pleasure to welcome Atin Batra (Founder and General Partner, Twenty Seven Ventures ) as the next #EcosystemGiants guest (and the first to share insights from Asia in this format!) at 11am GMT (12pm CET) on Tuesday 2 March 2021.
A conversation about :
The investment trends in Hong Kong at pre-seed and the state of the startup ecosystem
Learning from the successes and failures of the same business models in other markets - is it possible to lower the risk profile to fund/build a company?
Raising a first-time venture fund as a solo GP - what are LPs looking for in emerging managers in Hong Kong and the region?
Atin is the Founder and General Partner at Twenty Seven Ventures, a venture capital fund based out of Hong Kong, investing at the earliest stages (pre-Seed/Seed) worldwide in outstanding entrepreneurs building big businesses in the areas of EdTech and Future of Work. He has years of experience working with very early stage founders, prior to launching 27V, Atin was Principal at a deep tech- focused global VC and worked on every single one of the firm’s 17 portfolio companies (hardware/IoT). Before this, he led Hong Kong’s first corporate accelerator (Blueprint by property developer Swire Properties), helping founders test/validate startup ideas and build initial traction with early users. Formerly a Brand Manager for The Economic Times, our conversation will also touch on his path into VC and creating a more diverse venture industry.
